Initially Ram Shergill was fascinated by photographic work by Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Paul Strand and Ansel Adams. During his studies he met Philip Treacy and consequently starting to work with Isabella Blow and Alexander McQueen, he became a force within the fashion and art world himself. Ever since working with McQueen in the early stages of his career, he has been inspired by the fashion icon that once stressed to him that he loved the macabre. Ram became one of the key imagists of the avant-garde ‘Cool Britannia’ fashion scene and one of Britain’s leading fashion photographers and has since progressed into fine art photography.
His work has been shown in exhibitions worldwide including Sotheby’s, The Victoria & Albert Museum, Somerset House and the Whitechapel Gallery. Ram is regular contributor to international editions of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, GQ, and has had a book published by Thames & Hudson. He also publishes his own biannual magazine, The Protagonist Magazine, that features art, fashion and the best of stage and screen in an eclectic mix.
Presently Ram Shergill is using all Leica cameras. "I find my Leicas are lightweight and compact and signify photography in its purest form. The simple and effective shutter dial and aperture ring allow the photographer to do nothing but capture imagery without any digital programmes and interference or peripheral features.” Ram Shergill Websitewww.ramshergill.com
