‘Essences – Photographs from Four Decades’ is a comprehensive survey of works by German photographers Ute Mahler and Werner Mahler, made both together and apart. Its highlights include a collection of fashion editorials shot for Sibylle magazine from 1977 to 1994, and their collaborative series ‘Mona Lisas of the Suburbs’ (‘Monalisen der Vorstädte’), for which they made enigmatic portraits of ordinary girls in the suburbs of cities like Berlin, Reykjavik, and Florence; where Leonardo Da Vinci’s original Mona Lisa came from. The Mahlers have since produced a couple new series, ‘The Strange Days’ (‘Die Seltsamen Tage’) and ‘Small Town’ (‘Kleinstadt’), the latter of which will soon be published as a monograph by Hartmann Books.
