Sylvie Blum and Giovanni Gastel in Munich

Austrian model turned photographer Sylvie Blum’s signature style is characterised by dramatic monochrome studies of the female physique, interspersed with colourful flashes of lipsticked mouths in close-up. Italian actor, poet and photographer Giovanni Gastel, by way of contrast, is known for depicting women as celestial butterflies and erotic angels. Right now in Munich, a large selection of their works from the 1990s to present have been hung alongside one another in a bright constellation of formal juxtapositions that explore what exactly a fashion photograph can be. But the most intriguing question is: who’s supplying the power here, and who’s supplying the poetry?
