Shomei Tomatsu: Shomei Tomatsu

You’ve probably heard of the great 20th-century Japanese photographers Daido Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki, but have you heard of the man who did so much to inspire them, Shomei Tomatsu? Following his solo exhibition this summer at Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid, a comprehensive catalogue of the raw and grainy black and white photography with which Tomatsu (1930–2012) helped reinvent his homeland’s art world after the war has just been published. It’s the first catalogue published since his death, and features many scenes that came to define that era: from American soldiers stationed in Okinawa, to prostitutes plying their trade in Tokyo, to protestors in the streets in the 1960s. These are modern images of modern times. They take readers on a thrilling, moving, fast-paced journey from the 1950s to the 21st century.
