Rankin: The Portrait Positive

Legendary British photographer and frequent S Magazine collaborator Rankin’s provocative new series ‘The Portrait Positive’ features 16 women with highly visible facial or bodily differences, such as scar tissue or genetic conditions, in order to challenge our preconceptions regarding beauty, and who should be photographed. ‘Living with a visible difference,’ says Rankin, ‘you are literally judged by your appearance and compared to what I think is a fake idea of what it is to be beautiful or even “normal”. The only way to shift this perception is to talk about it and face it head on.’ The project was conceived by event organiser Stephen Bell, who was born with syndactyly, and fashion designer Steven Tai, who featured all of these women in his latest presentation at London Fashion Week, and sales of the book will raise money for the British charity Changing Faces; so go buy your copy today!
