When renowned German photographer Peter Lindbergh was asked to shoot his third Pirelli Calendar in 2017, he decided to assemble a superstar cast of his favourite actors – Jessica Chastain, Penélope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, Dame Helen Mirren, Julianne Moore, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlotte Rampling, Léa Seydoux, Uma Thurman, Alicia Vikander, Kate Winslet, Robin Wright and Zhang Ziyi – and shoot them as they really are, without artifice, with as little makeup or retouching as possible. ‘What is merely beautiful has always bored me,’ Lindbergh explains, ‘I’m interested in what is powerful and real.’ The results were nothing short of spectacular. Now, to follow this up, Lindbergh has gone through 37,000 unreleased, raw and revealing images from the shoot and handpicked a selection for his latest book, ‘Shadows On the Wall’.
