Patrick Demarchelier at Staley-Wise Gallery

Patrick Demarchelier was given his first camera in 1960, in Le Havre, Northern France, for his 17th birthday. Since then, he’s had a long journey: learning his trade working in darkrooms, emigrating to New York in 1975 to assist Henri Cartier-Bresson and, in 1992, taking the job at Harper’s Bazaar that would enable him to become one of the most successful fashion photographers of modern times. That extraordinary last quarter-century now provides the focus for ‘1992 - 2017’, his latest solo show in his adopted hometown of New York. His work was once described by Anna Wintour as ‘timelessly classic’. It certainly is: give Demarchelier a supermodel, some lights and a plain background, and somehow he’s able to shoot a magical, flawless, gorgeous portrait that resembles a renaissance oil painting.
