Norman Parkinson (1939–90) had one of the most illustrious careers of any British fashion photographer. In 1934 he opened his own studio in London’s stylish Piccadilly district; during World War II he worked as a reconnaissance photographer, documenting France from above with the Royal Air Force; from 1945 to 1960 he worked for Vogue, where he helped to change the way we look at fashion photography by taking his models out of the studio and into the real world; in 1980 he took over from Cecil Beaton as the Royal Family’s official photographer. Parkinson’s stunning archive of over half a million negatives has recently been acquired by Iconic Images and, to celebrate, they’ll be exhibiting some of his most glamorous, iconic images of the likes of Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot and Sophia Loren at this year’s Photo London fair in Somerset House.
