‘American Beauty’, Marvin Newman

It would be fair to say that widespread recognition came later to Marvin Newman than might have been expected: it was only last year, at the age of 89 (he’s 90 now) that Taschen published the first major monograph of his work. It would also be fair to say that there have been hiccups along the way: after a leak led to significant water damage and the temporary closure of Kahmann Gallery’s Lindengracht 35 space, his exhibition had to be relocated at the last minute to art’otel amsterdam’s 5&33 Gallery. But the show must go on! Now ‘American Beauty’ is finally open, and it’s the perfect place to acquaint yourself with the colourful street photography, reportage and portraiture of one of the 20th-century’s true greats.
