Mark Steinmetz: Past K-Ville
02/18/2019
‘My parents gave me my first camera when I was perhaps six years old,’ recalls American artist Mark Steinmetz. ‘I remember coming home from a trip with my family, getting out of the car and deciding to photograph my house.’ It’s remained a lifelong passion, and one that he’s been lucky enough to make a career out of. His new book ‘Past K-Ville’ (2018) continues where his last, ‘15 Miles to K-Ville’ (2016), left off, taking us on a wandering journey around the outskirts of the imaginary town of K-Ville, located somewhere between Knoxville, Tennessee and Athens, Georgia, where he now lives. Although it’s just been published, the collection was shot in the mid 1990s; it focuses on teenagers, and young couples, and everyday life in America’s laid-back, magical Deep South. It’s a love letter to his home, and also to photography: ‘Hunting for photographs is never boring for me,’ says Steinmetz, ‘and a wonderful new photograph is a kind of miracle. Photography is a discipline that’s given shape to my life and helped me to grow.’
