Since he first started working for Rolling Stone in 1987 – the same year he shot the publicity image for this exhibition, which shows LL Cool J relaxing in a red tracksuit in Queens – American photographer Mark Seliger has spent his days crafting highly imaginative portraits that bring out the personalities of his celebrity sitters. For instance in 1998, by which time he was the magazine’s chief photographer, he photographed legendary comedian Jerry Seinfeld in the guise of the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. In 2001 Seliger signed an exclusive contract with Condé Nast, and his subjects grew even larger: Patti Smith, Barack Obama, the Dalai Lama! Now four decades of his star-studded work can be admired at Fahey/Klein, and also in an accompanying book from Abrams.
