Malick Sidibé: Mali Twist

Malick Sidibé (1935–2016), also known as ‘the eye of Bamako’, may be gone but won’t ever be forgotten. He captured the vibrant youth culture of Bamako, Mali’s capital, back in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s as the city was opening up to the latest European and Cuban dance crazes and fashions and transforming into a wonderful cultural melting pot. In 1962 he opened his legendary Malick Studio in Bamako, where many of these portraits were shot, and then spent his evenings and nights going to parties and photographing the revellers and shiny, happy people there; flicking through ‘Mali Twist’ is like going out and dancing until the sun comes up over and over again.
