‘Beyond the Portrait’ tells the story of three extraordinary decades of American portrait photographer Greg Gorman’s career in 40 stunning prints. This show, his first solo presentation in Italy, mixes iconic celebrity portraiture – highlights include images of a young Leonardo DiCaprio and David Bowie – with classical nudes, and stark monochromes with sudden bursts of colour, in order to reveal the whole breadth and development of Gorman’s oeuvre. Along the way, certain themes emerge: his interest in body language and musculature, his love of unusual angles, and his absolute mastery of the use of shadows.
