Giovanni Gastel in Luxembourg

Govanni Gastel, Untitled (Alona), 2001

Milanese photographer Giovanni Gastel has led a charmed and glamorous life. In the 1960s, at only 12 years old, he was already acting in experimental theatre troupes. In the 1970s, he wrote poetry. In the 1980s, he began his illustrious career in fashion photography. In 2016 he was honoured with a grand retrospective in his hometown, at Palazzo della Ragione. His uncle was the legendary Luchino Visconti, Palme d’Or-winning director of The Leopard and Death In Venice, and one of the great virtuosos of decadent, silver-screen homoerotica – Gastel does something similar but with erotica and still photography. His ‘Divine Ladies’ are a collection of boldly stylized, colour-saturated prints that reinterpret the female body as powerful modern artworks.
