Gert Weigelt has had two amazing careers. First he danced in companies such as the Royal Swedish Ballet, the Cullberg Ballet and the Dutch Dans Theatre. Then in 1975, when he’d grown too old for that, he went back to school, to Cologne’s College of Art and Design, to train as a photographer. Before long he had returned to the stage to take beautiful images of the international dance scene, which became his new job. ‘Autopsy in Black and White’ gathers together his studies of dancers posing under his studio lights and, as the title suggests, presents us with his highly analytical approach: Weigelt shows us his subjects’ extraordinary musculature and their power, even when they’re standing still.
