Erwin Blumenfeld (1897–1969) was overflowing with ideas. His latest retrospective includes pictures shot halfway up the Eiffel Tower, complicated compositions made with mirrors in the studio, double and triple exposures, warped shadows, Dadaist solarisations and more besides. Not only was he one of the most important early pioneers of fashion photography – he started shooting for Vogue in 1938 and still holds the record for most Vogue covers – he was also one of the first to elevate the practice to the status of art. Originally from Berlin, Blumenfeld kicked off his career in Amsterdam and Paris in the 1930s before relocating to New York in 1941 and growing into the highest paid, and most influential, photographer of his time.
