Fashion photographers search high and low for inspiration, but rarely as far back as Erik Madigan Heck. ‘I’ve always looked to painting as a guide for how one can use colour and represent the figure,’ the American explains, ‘from the work of Édouard Vuillard and the Nabis, Edgar Degas and the Impressionists, to contemporary painters like Peter Doig, Marlene Dumas and Gerhard Richter. Art is a continuum you are meant to build from.’ Heck uses many of the methods available today, from in-camera effects to the virtuoso saturating of colours and softening of lines in post-production, in order to create striking, painterly compositions that borrow from yesterday while looking towards tomorrow; visions, in other words, of the ‘Old Future’.
