As part of the “Oh! Pays-Bas” Dutch cultural season in France, one of the world’s most beautiful photography museums, the Jeu de Paume in the Tuileries, presents a solo show of documentary photographer and filmmaker Ed van der Elsken (1925–90). From the mid-century onwards van der Elksen could be found on the streets of Paris, or Amsterdam, or Tokyo, or Hong Kong, searching for real people to take candid pictures of. The result: a rich oeuvre of black and white (for the most part) images of cool-looking people smoking, dancing, kissing themselves in the mirror, kissing other people, crossing the street, making love. His first book, “Love on the Left Bank” (1956) was all about Paris, and now his pictures are returning to the city of light.
