Daidō Moriyama remains one of the great chroniclers of modern Japanese life, and particularly of the hidden margins of his hometown of Tokyo: intriguing characters, inviting backstreets, busy animals and curving motorcycles. These are photographs that one wishes to step right into. Now, to coincide with Moriyama’s inclusion in the Barbican Gallery’s latest group show ‘Another Kind of Life: Photography on the Margins’, Michael Hoppen Gallery has organised a small show of his vintage gelatin silver prints. After all, few photographers have as distinct a style as Moriyama: he shoots with a handheld automatic camera, he takes those shots into the dark room, and somehow he conjures up his dramatic, black-and-white chiaroscuros.
