Antonio Lopez was born in Puerto Rico but moved with his family to Spanish Harlem, New York, in 1950 when he was still a child. It was here in New York that he first started making drawings for his seamstress mother, and also here that he grew and grew his talents and became the leading fashion illustrator of the 1970s and 80s: ‘Antonio’. What’s less well known however is that Lopez also took fantastic photographs of the many glamorous stars he worked with, partied alongside, and often helped to make famous in the first place: Jerry Hall, Tina Chow, Pat Cleveland, Grace Coddington. Sadly he passed away in Los Angeles in 1987, aged only 44 – but this spring Danziger Gallery’s celebrating his life with the first ever exhibition to focus only on Antonio’s photographs.
