Appearances may only be skin deep, but when it comes to photography, appearances are all we have to go on. ‘Skin Deep’ is an exhibition of three photographers exploring alternative modes of beauty, ones that are less often seen on the walls of Parisian galleries or in the pages of fashion magazines: Pedro Slim shoots portraits of young Mexicans that he scouted in the street, paying particular attention to their gang tattoos; Andreas Fux turns his lens on Berlin clubbers, on skinheads with pierced nipples, scarred faces and hands bound with rope; Karlheinz Weinberger, working in the 1960s and 1970s, brings Swiss cowboys to the apartment he shares with his mother for a series of close-ups. Together, each of these series grows into a portrait of a rarely seen community, challenging us to imagine what’s going on underneath the surface.
