Alice Neale + Isabelle Sayer: Protect
11/06/2018
The plain cover of this collaborative release by three emerging talents from London, photographer Alice Neale, stylist Isabelle Sayer and designer Rory Gleeson, says it all; this is an understated book, one that tells its story quietly but elegantly, and rewards concentration. Neale and Sayer are both interested in making pictures of young girls, not models, and in recording innocence as it’s perhaps about to be lost, in the good and the bad of coming of age. Their subjects are portrayed close-up, looking away from the camera, in unguarded moments; ‘moments,’ they say, ‘before a performance, when anything might happen – transformative, accidental. Actors are half themselves, half someone “other”. The stage is set.’ What will happen next is hard to tell. But ‘Protect’ is available for pre-order now, and each copy will be specially made on demand.
