To mark their 20th anniversary this summer, Galerie Camera Work are mounting a show of 25 large Hans Feurer prints in their main space on Kantstrasse. The Swiss photographer is known above all for his vivid, fauvist colours, achieved on film long before the years of digital post-production and saturation. Included in this exhibition is a famous portrait of Iman, from his Kenzo campaign in 1983, wearing a scarlet veil and headscarf entwined with a lurid fuchsia scarf. She looks like a Henri Matisse painting. An earlier picture, from 1976, shows Eeva Ketola standing on a beach, naked except for a sheet of blue gauze held to her by the wind. She looks like she’s part of a Yves Klein installation. But of course these aren’t Matisses or Kleins; they’re photographs by Hans Feurer, the master of colour.
